A narrative

2 min read
I have a story in mind, a story for me. But it would only mean something to me, not others. And so, the story has to change.

I have the backgrounds ready, or at least part of the backgrounds for my story. But it is a personal story, and it wouldn't mean anything to others. In the past, I would have continued on with my story, ignoring everything else. I would love to do so for this story too, but I would like to have someone else other than me understand it too.

And so, I have to write a clear narrative for this story, in hopes that it will reach somewhere, instead of merely sleeping in my heart. These are some of the images: centridus.deviantart.com/art/b… . These images alone are enough to tell a story, but I need a narrative to hold everything together. Without the narrative, these pictures mean nothing at all.

So what narrative can I put in? I have put the images in the order which they will appear, and which image leads to which. The coding is already done, but the narrative remains as elusive. The story will be presented as a point and click game, which is something foreign to me, since I'm more used to writing a straight forward narrative. So what should I write? What could I use to link up all these pictures?

And so I ponder. And so I seek the elusive narrative, this thread to sew everything together. And I am running out of time...

ovnogesl

Part 4: centridus.deviantart.com/art/o…

ovnogesl is a short game idea that I had in mind. As I am not proficient in coding games, I've decided to create a game playthrough/ walkthrough for it instead.

ovnogesl is a story about two friends. It is about an obsession by one of them that stops the other from moving on.
The main character, White, so called due to his white hair, wakes in a place where energy is required to progress. However, what he has is limited. Most of the people around him avoids or ignores him, with only a couple of them talking to him. He meets a girl who asks him if he wants to remember, but she gives him no choice on the matter.

And slowly, as he explores the place he is in, or as he is forced to perform certain tasks as his limited energy requires him to stick to a specific route, he finds out a bit more about his past, about the little girl, about Brown, his supposed friend.

In the end, White finds that he is, or might be dead, and what keeps him 'endlessly' wandering on is Brown's obsession with him, preventing him from moving on. Friendship, love, or just not willing to lose him, White doesn't care at all. Perhaps that is the reason leading to Brown's obsession with him in the first place. When White chooses to leave Brown and his world behind, he discards everyone and everything, and finally breaks from these 'dreams' of his. He can finally sleep on, dreamless.
~
So, what is ovnogesl? It is a love song, from Brown to White, to keep him company as he is alone and dead. The feelings behind the song was too strong, that White became trapped in it, in the endless dreams trying to keep him alive.

After several months of planning, writing, and coding, version 0.81a of Eons: Dark Hound is done!
centridus.deviantart.com/art/E…

There are still other areas for improvement, but right now, the story is complete!
There is still much to be tweaked, especially the two missing backgrounds, but these will be slowly done and added in.
But right now, I'm quite pleased with the results, and after these few days of struggling with the coding...
I have learnt much about coding, but not enough to make a save and load button. I have changed the same line of code across all levels because they don't work. Several times. I even dreamt about overcoming a particular piece of coding after it stumped me for several days.
After all these, I don't think I'll be returning to making flash stories any time soon. But it was a fun (and hair tearing) experience. The amount of time spent on images are slightly more than coding, due to the amount of work spent researching (wolf and dogs anatomy), and lining the backgrounds. I have 2 versions of the script, the older one having less balanced character scenes and is so not used(Aleon had 10, Sedia had 7, Oangi had 5, Clovor had 3).
For coding... Quite a lot of time is spend trying to move the buttons into other places, zooming to 400% to make sure they are somewhat in place (although I think I shouldn't spend so much time on this). Much time is also spent coding the buttons and scenes, such as ensuring replaying an old level doesn't unlock a new one, but playing a new one does. Having events that jump back and forth a timeline also meant that a lot of time is spent trying to figure out which event comes first, which... resulted in several pieces of paper being full of scribbles of the events.
Right now, I do not have any more energy to change the game further. I have tried to create background music for this story, but is faced with music block. I tried to rescale the backgrounds, but the amount of work required to extend the background so that less details are blocked by the 200 pixels tall textbox is extremely daunting. I am still researching on how to draw town backgrounds. I still have my thread up in Kongregate's forums asking for help in making a save and load button for frames for AS2. I have read tutorials online for it but didn't understand any parts of it at all/ they don't work.
So, that's it for now for Eons: Dark Hound. Perhaps one day I will return to it and update it, one day which is not now.
